Q: What type of video are you interested in? Who is your inspiration?
A: Mainly documentary style. I’m very interested in the process of making a film, what it involves from start to finish. I don’t have a specific inspiration at the moment but Michael Moore is definitely up there.
When it comes to documentary videos there are 6 main types used; The Poetic Mode, The Expository Mode, The Observational Mode, The Participatory Mode, The Reflexive Mode, and The Performative Mode. There is a trend being seen with younger up-and coming filmmakers making documentaries modified with elements more commonly found in fiction films. As opposed to boring videos where the facts are just given to you point blank it is becoming more popular to do videos that are informative but also have touches of humor, provocativeness, and blunt statements or opinions that become thought provoking. Some examples include Michael Moore’s, Bowling for Columbine and Sicko or Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me. There has also been an increase in the number of U.S. filmmakers who want to make films about other countries, possibly due to there being so many independent filmmakers in the U.S. compared to other countries, this leads to a lot of duplication of topics. But, with the changes of the styles of documentaries, what is available, and what lengths some filmmakers are willing to go to for their story, there really isn’t a shortage of topics to choose from.
